NHS Scotland (UK) is demonstrating its commitment to sustainable development and has joined the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) network. NHS Scotland is the publicly funded healthcare system of Scotland and represents more than 900 healthcare facilities and over 180,000 staff - making it one of the largest members of the GGHH network in Europe.
NHS Scotland recently released its Climate Emergency and Sustainability Strategy (2022-2026), which sets out the system’s plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and impact on the environment, adapt to climate change, and to better contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. As part of its Strategy, NHS Scotland aims to become a net-zero health service by 2040 at the latest.
"We are delighted to welcome NHS Scotland to the growing global sustainable healthcare movement. We look forward to working with them to realise their sustainability targets and learning from them as we continue to build a community of practice and transform the healthcare sector in Europe", says Aidan Long, Associate Director, Networks & Communications, Health Care Without Harm Europe.
GGHH is a worldwide community of more than 1,600 members in 81 countries, representing the interests of 68,000 hospitals and health centres. The network is focused on the interests and needs of healthcare sustainability practitioners. Our members are using innovation, ingenuity, and investment to transform the health sector and create a healthy future for people and the planet.
